The story itself seems very straight forward in the way it’s presented, 3rd person perspective, narrative writing style, realism (ENotes.com), but in actuality there’s a lot more to the story. Paternalistic A paternalistic leader often has the following characteristics: – The leader considers himself a ‘father figure’ and acts in this manner; – Leader does not always involve other people in decision-making; – The leader considers it important to guide and support the staff; Case study In this case study we will look Jack Welch, a well-known and influential business leader of the 20th century. Mr Welsh was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of General Electric Co. (GE) and he is considered a very good example of a born leader. During the 41 years he spent working with GE, he helped transform the company into a very successful, productive and thus valuable business. As a CEO, he is renowned for his creative and innovative leadership style. Jack Welsh commenced his career at GE as a Junior Engineer in 1960, just after receiving a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois. Not long after starting work at GE, Mr Welch accepted a different offer from International Minerals and Chemicals, as he was not satisfied with the bureaucracy at GE. However, this plan never materialised as Reuben Geutoff, an executive at GE at the time, convinced him to stay and helped reduce the bureaucracy. As such, Jack Welch remained with GE, and gradually progressed through the company, from head of the plastics division in 1968, to group executive in 1973. Only twenty years after starting at the company, Mr Welch became the youngest CEO at GE to date. During this time working in this post, the company grew from a relatively small manufacturer of light bulbs and simple electrical appliances, to a multi-billion industrial conglomerate by the turn of the century. Over 900 acquisitions, worth several billion dollars were under his supervision, and made the company several more billion dollars through the sale of part of businesses. The innovation management process One of Mr Welch’s most important skills was the fact that he was an intuitive strategist. Intuitive leadership sensitively opens opportunities for personal expansion among high value executives, enabling them to connect with and discover the hidden distinctions of transformational change that exist within themselves. For example: Implementation – the turning of prospective ideas into a new product or service, or resulting in a change in a process. Acquiring – the combination of existing as well as new knowledge and insight, both from the organisation itself as from external sources, to find an answer to the problem. Executing – turning information into a product, which can then be marketed and launched. Launching – Show the product to the market and ensure acceptance or adoption Sustaining – Ensuring the use of the project in the longer term Learning – Using the project cycle to develop, improve and change the manner in which the project is managed The streategy used by Mr Welch provides an opportunity to reduce unnecessary rules and continually question the development of different rules, as well as implement a new structure or alter the way in which the organisation operates. Such changes may be necessary because the organisation’s circumstances have changed or it is taking on new activities. Mr Welch was known as a great communicator, skilled at building trust between staff throughout the organisation. At the same time, he was highly competitive. He believed that management should make sure that new ideas are encouraged and that obstackles be removed from product advancement. Companies should create a setting where staff-led initiatives are promoted, and where training and innovation was available to all that worked there. As a result of his competitive edge, Mr Welch believed such innovative projects should be carefully controlled and managed within the company. Innovative ideas can originate from anywhere in an organisational structure, but it is recognised that developing the â€Å"raw idea† to an â€Å"implemented idea† needs careful support. Managers should be provided the opportunity to be creative and try out new ideas and concepts (within pre-considered risks). Of course the manager should remain accountable and as such the project should be implemented with consideration for timing and budgets. Companies should ensure they have the capacity to accurately envisage potential risks and opportunities, and have the ability to act on any necessary changes. As such, they should ensure that their administrative rules provide support to the innovations in the workplace, instead of providing red-tape which may hold back ideas. It is important for leaders to have vision, authority, but it is more important for them to reach out to individuals all along the chain of command to make sure that everyone feels involved in the process of change. Leaders who don’t do this, and attempt to impose their vision from the top-down instead, might manage to achieve something that looks like their vision, but which is essentially empty. To persuade stakeholders of the benefits of a creative and innovative idea, one must adopt a variety of approaches to make the ideas appear powerful and compelling. If the ideas you are promoting are congruent with your core beliefs and values, it will be easier to promote them with true passion. Hence, it is important to first consider as to why a particular change or improvement needs to happen, and also how you see this happening. For example adultery is considered as a valid reason for a divorce as it is the breaking of one of the Ten Commandments, as Jesus taught â€Å"if a man divorces a woman for any other cause than her unfaithfulness, then he is guilty of making her commit adultery if she marries again† (Matthew 5:32). Another reason peopl e may use to claim life long marriage is too difficult is domestic abuse. If a man were to be abusing his wife, then she should not be expected to stay with him in fear of being harmed.Roman Catholic teachings state that once two people are married they have become â€Å"one flesh† (Genesis 2:24) and no one can separate them. If they are then divorced by the state, in God’s eyes they are still married so any other relationships they have are considered to be adulterous. The only accepted reason for remarriage in the Catholic Church is if either husband or wife has died. Despite these strict beliefs, the Church does leave the possibility of the marriage never actually taking place. This is when for specific reasons, the couple’s union was never genuine, for example one of the partners may have still been married or one may have lied when making the marriage vows or may not have understood the vows they were making.Recently, many Christian denominations, excluding Catholicism have begun to accept divorce and altered their rules accordingly. An example is in the Orthodox Church the Church will grant a divorce and allow remarriage. Although the Orthodox Church allows divorce and remarriage, very rarely is a third marriage permitted. Quakers believe that if there is no spiritual union between husband and wife, then there is no point in having a marriage.However some Catholics believe if a marriage is not life long then the sacrament is not as special as it should be. It should be life long because vows for a life long relationship were made before God and â€Å"what God has joined together let no man put asunder† (Mark 10:9). If a person has to decide on whether to stay in a marriage that is failing, despite every effort to make it last, for example through marriage counselling, then only as a last resort should divorce be acceptable. An example of when this may affect a Christian couple today is if one person, lost their business or job and their partner, would be supportive and comforting as this is what they vowed to do when they were married.A husband must take his wife â€Å"to love and to cherish, till death do us part.† Likewise, a wife must promise the same. This means in a marriage there should be love and affection, respect and admiration between the two, in order for it to be as fulfilling as possible. The inclusion of these vows in the marriage ceremony, signify that marriages will all have their ups and downs and couples will be faced with tremendously difficult obstacles to overcome throughout their journey as husband and wife, but â€Å"Love never gives up; and its faith, hope and patience never fail.† (1 Corinthians 13:7) This shows that with perseverance and using the vows as reminders of what you as a married couple have pledged before God and the community, marriage will help you grow as individuals as well as â€Å"one flesh† (Genesis 2:24).Marriage is an indissolvable relationship both made with your husband/wife as well as with God. The marriage vows are when the actual sacrament takes place in the Roman Catholic service. Quakers see the vow as a declaration of intent and not a life long promise. They also do not believe marriage is a sacrament. Then the couple sign the marriage register, to make the union legal. That it is a unique and special relationship with God and it cannot be ended. In the 20’s people would’ve had to send a letter or travel long distances to talk to others a ways away. Now, this can be done in just a matter of seconds. However, some things have remained the same, such as fashion. Fashion was and always will be a large part of society. People usually always want to look their best so it’ll always be a big thing. The morals of people have changed since the 20’s, although not necessarily for the better. The youth these days are very different than those of the 1920’s. Music and friends seems to devour their time. It seems that the 20’s was a more organized time where everything was taken care of with little mistake. Now, on the other hand, it’s almost the opposite. Drinking, has become more open and accepted. Whereas during the early 1900’s, drinking was prohibited so it obviously was more quiet. The government in the 1920’s was much better than now. A large percent of married women stayed at home, but now almost everyone is working. Also, the organized crime back then was more effective than it is now in caring out its operations and not getting caught. One thing that separates the two time periods is the amount of terrorism that has struck the US. War was a big part of the 20’s and also is today. In conclusion, there are many differences in the government, morally, and socially from the 1920’s until now. Although some aspects have stayed the same, times were more organized, sophisticated, and tolerable than now.

Brief Overview of the Anti-Lynching Crusade Movement The Anti-lynching movement was one of many civil rights movements established in the United States. The purpose of the movement was to end lynching of African-American men and women. The movement was comprised mainly of African-American men and women who worked in a variety of ways to end the practice. Origins of Lynching Following the passing of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments, African-Americans were considered full citizens of the United States. As they sought to build businesses and homes that would help establish communities, white supremacist organizations sought to repress African-American communities. With the establishment of Jim Crow laws prohibiting African-Americans from being able to participate in all aspects of American life, white supremacists had destroyed their enfranchisement. And to destroy any means of success and oppress a community, lynching was used to create fear. Establishment Although there is no clear founding date of the anti-lynching movement, it peaked around the 1890s. The earliest and most reliable record of lynching were found in 1882 with 3,446 victims being African-American men and women. Almost concurrently, African-American newspapers began  publishing news articles and editorials to show their outrage at these acts. For instance, Ida B. Wells-Barnett expressed her outrage in the pages of Free Speech a paper she published out of Memphis. When her offices where burned in retaliation for her investigative journalism, Wells-Barnett continued to work from New York City, publishing A Red Record. James Weldon Johnson wrote about lynching in the New York Age. Later as a leader in the NAACP, he organized silent protests against the actionshopeing to bring national attention. Walter White, also a leader in the NAACP, used his light complextion to gather research in the South about lynching. The publication of this news article bought national attention to the issue and as a result, several organizations were established to fight against lynching. Organizations The anti-lynching movement was spearheaded by organizations such as the National Association of Colored Women (NACW), the National Association of Colored People (NAACP), the Council for Interracial Cooperation (CIC) as well as the Association of Southern Women for the Prevention of Lynching (ASWPL). By using education, legal action, as well as news publications, these organizations worked to end lynching. Ida B. Wells-Barnett worked with both the NACW and NAACP to establish anti-lynching legislation. Women such as Angelina Weld Grimke and Georgia Douglass Johnson, both writers, used poetry and other literary forms to expose the horrors of lynching. White women joined in the fight against lynching in the 1920s and 1930s. Women such as Jessie Daniel Ames and others worked through the CIC and ASWPL to end the practice of lynching. The writer, Lillian Smith wrote a novel entitled Strange Fruit in 1944. Smith followed up with a collection of essays entitled Killer of Dreams in which she bought the arguments established by the ASWPL to the national forefront. Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill African-American women, working through the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), were among the first to protest lynching. During the 1920s, the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill became the first anti-lynching bill to be voted on by the Senate. Although the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill ultimately did not become a law, its supporters did not feel they had failed. The attention made citizens of the United States condemn lynching. In addition, money raised to enact this bill was given to the NAACP by Mary Talbert. The NAACP used this money to sponosor its federal antilynching bill that was proposed in the 1930s.

In the distribution center the employees loading the truck and the driver works together to ensure the customers receives their packages in a timely manner. Employees working in the distribution center must make sure the packages are separated and loaded on the trucks correctly. Once the trucks have been loaded the driver is responsible for making the delivers on schedule. However, in 1833 emancipation was not as complete as these words would suggest, as there were clauses in the Act about an Apprenticeship system which delayed complete emancipation until 1838. The Apprenticeship system was originally applied to the plan instituted in the interval between slavery and emancipation to prepare the slaves to assume the duties of freemen. The new law freed immediately those slaves under the age of six years old; however older slaves were to be ‘apprenticed’ for up to eight years. There were†¦show more content†¦The planters in Jamaica almost immediately adopted an ‘eight hours a day schedule’, which meant that apprentices had little time to cultivate their provision grounds, since Saturday was their market day and the fact that they were not allowed to cultivate their grounds on Sunday. The ap prentices in Jamaica were unable to negotiate with their former masters about days that they can cultivate which further fuelled their animosity towards the Apprenticeship system and the planters. Historians Beckles and Sheppard had suggested that this not only inconvenienced the apprentices but also â€Å"prevented them from pursing alternate occupations to working on estates. The apprentices were kept dependant on the estates for their livelihood so that when full freedom came they would have been accustomed to look to the estates for their earnings†. Furthermore, the apprentices also had to confront corrupted magistrates who often sympathized with the planters rather than the ex slaves. Most stipendiary magistrates were often poor white men from England who lacked wealth, power and prestige unlike most planters in the British Caribbean. As a result of this, they were often bribed and manipulated by the planters.
